Logo

The lab's logo represents several facets of the lab. First, it celebrates our main model - the rat - an amazingly smart creature which can learn intricately complex tasks and is amenable to most modern neuroscience tools. Second, the maze backdrop symbolizes both the research interests of the lab - uncovering how animals learn and make decisions - and the puzzling challenges that we, as investigators, have to overcome to understand the nature of the world. In addition, the maze is designed to resemble the style of Marajoara art, from the ancient civilization that inhabited the Marajó island, very close to where Dr. Costa was born and raised. The Marajoara culture is considered to be the most sophisticated of Pre-Cabraline Brazil and artisanal replicas of their pottery are still common in Amazonian households today, including Dr. Costa's family home. This subtle homage to one of the most complex ancient civilizations of the Americas is not only a nod to Dr. Costa's heritage, but also relates to the complexity and scope of the questions that we aim to address.
